Goessel, Centre track teams compete

Track teams from Goessel and Centrecompeted in the Goessel Quint Tuesday, April 18.

The Bluebird boys captured second place while the Cougar boys placed third.

Garrett Hiebert led the Bluebirds with three individual gold medals and anchored the winning 4×400-meter team.

Hiebert won the javelin (178-11), triple jump (40-43⁄4) and the 400 (54.93) and teamed with Sheldon Goerzen, Craig Banman and Chad Schrag to win the 4×400 (3:51.34). Wade Wilson won the 3,200 meters (11:37.12), Tyler Schroeder placed third in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 46-3.

“We look forward to each meet and the improvements that each individual is making,” coach Vanesa Schroeder said.

For the Centre boys, Jeremy Kristek won the high jump (5-10).

For the girls, Centre was fourth while Goessel placed fifth.

Courtney Berkholz led the Bluebirds by placing second in the 100 (13.33) and fourth in the 200 (28.55).

Jitka Vitova established a new personal best in the 300-meter hurdles (57.01) to finish fifth.

For Centre, Jackie Klenda finished second in the pole vault (7-6) and third in the 400 (1:08.34).

The Goessel golf team placed fifth among 12 teams at the Prairie Trails Country Club in El Dorado last Tuesday.

Leading the Bluebirds was Zach Frey, who earned a sixth-place medal with a score of 79. Also competing were Nate Ensz (84), Derek Brown (92), Cameron Voth (93), Alex Drake (101) and Jake Schrag (102).

“They all improved their scores from when they competed in the El Dorado High School meet a few weeks ago on the same course,” coach Greg Bontrager said.

“This was our lowest four-man combined score yet.”
