Battling wind gusts up to 40 mph and some extremely keen competition, the Hillsboro High School tennis opened its season Thursday with a third-place finish at the Conway Springs Quadrangular.
In No. 1 singles, Kyle Kroeker lost 3-8 to Foster of South Barber, defeated Zimmerman of Circle 8-6, then lost to Martzen of Conway Springs 6-8.
Macy Fadenrecht won all three matches at No. 2 singles. He defeated Shelite of South Barber 8-5, Mechem of Circle 8-1 and Koester of Conway Springs 8-4.
In doubles, the No. 1 team of Peter Fast and Robert Jost lost to South Barber 5-8, to Circle 6-8 and to Conway Springs 1-8.
The No. 2 doubles team of Ric Johnson and Clay Shewey defeated South Barber 8-7 (7-2) and Circle 9-2 before losing to Conway Springs 6-8.
Conway Springs won the team title with 23 points, followed by South Barber with 21, Hillsboro 13 and Circle 3.
Coach Kory Unruh said, “If we win three matches we could have won, we would have won the whole meet.”
The Trojans were scheduled to return to action Tuesday at Smoky Valley. On Thursday they will host the Trojan Invitational, with matches beginning at the Sports Complex at 3 p.m.
