HUMC hog roast planned for Friday

Hillsboro United Methodist Men’s Fellowship will host its 11th annual hog roast from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, March 17, at the church’s 905 E. D location.

Donations for the meal will support projects within the church as well as the Hillsboro community.

Roast pork with all the trimmings will be available at the church or with free delivery by calling 947-5643.

A silent auction is planned in conjunction with the hog roast.

Blood drive set for Goessel March 20

An American Red Cross blood drive is planned for noon through 6 p.m., March 20, at Goessel Mennonite Church.

The goal is to have 80 donors participate. All blood types are needed, especially O-positive and O-negative.

Eastmoor plans Mini Ashram

Eastmoor Church, Marion, will sponsor a mini Christian Ashram March 24 through 26.

The Christian Ashram differs from traditional revival meetings because it centers on the needs of the people who attend. The format begins with “Hour of the Open Heart” where people can share needs.

The event focuses on the earliest Christian creed “Jesus is Lord” and participants meet in small groups for prayer.

The Ashram at Eastmoor begins with registration at 5:30 p.m. Friday, and includes a carry-in supper and service.

Events resume with registration at 9 a.m. Saturday and continue through 4 p.m. A worship service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday concludes the weekend.

Guest speakers for the weekend are evangelist Jimmie Pyles, general secretary of the United Christian Ashram, and Bible teacher Mike Howard, who has been involved in the Ashram movement for the past 15 years and has been director since 2000.

Entries sought for button contest

The planning committee for the Florence Labor Day celebration is accepting entries for its button contest.

The theme of this year’s event is, “Florence Fired Up!”

Winners will be chosen by popular vote April 29 at Florence Labor Day’s first fund-raiser, the Spring Fling at the Oasis gymnasium in Florence.

Entry forms available from the Marion-Florence High School art department or contact Donna Rosiere at 620-382-2611.

The deadline for entries is April 24.

USD 410 screening for kindergarten

Unified School District 410 will be screening children for kindergarten April 12-13 at Hillsboro Elementary School.

Parents with a preschooler who will be eligible for kindergarten for the 2006-07 year should contact the HES office at 947-3981 for more information.

Children need to be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1, 2006, to be eligible for kindergarten this fall.

Florence church plans singspiration

Florence United Methodist Church is planning a singspiration at 7 p.m., March 19.

The evening will feature local talent from area churches and an offering will benefit Nancy Shanklin.

Farm Bureau offers two scholarships

The Marion County Farm Bureau Association has made available two $500 scholarships for seniors graduating this spring.

Applicants must be members of the Marion County Farm Bureau organization but do not need to be entering an agriculture-related field of study.

Applications are available at the Farm Bureau office in Marion or from high school counselors. The deadline for applying is April 21.

MCSEC board will meet March 27

The Marion County Special Education Cooperative board of directors will meet for its monthly meeting at 7 p.m., March 27, in the MCSEC conference room at 302 W. Eighth in Florence.

The meeting is open to the public.

USD 411 screening for kindergarten

Goessel Elementary School will host a kindergarten screening Friday, March 31, at Goessel Mennonite Church.

All children who will be 5 on or before Aug. 31, 2006, are encouraged to attend this meeting. The screenings will give both the parent and the school necessary information on a child’s readiness for school.

USD 397 to screen for kindergarten

Unified School District 397 will be screening for kindergarten on Friday morning at the Centre Elementary School in Lost Springs.

Children who will be 5 years on or before Aug. 21, 2006, are encouraged to participate in the screening. To make an appointment, parents should call the district office at 785-983-4304.

The district is asking parents with children who will be 4 years old by or on Aug. 31, 2006, to contact the district office by April 4 in regard to the district’s at-risk program.

Whether parents are interested in the program or not, it is essential for the district to have information about the child in order to make decisions about the program’s future.

The district is planning parent-teacher conferences from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 16. School will not be in session on Friday, March 17.

Spring break for the district will run from Monday through Friday, March 20-24.

Benefit hog roast set for March 18

A benefit hog roast for Bar H Boys Ranch and Walk for Life is planned for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, March 18, at the American Legion in Canton.

In addition to a meal, door prizes and raffle are included. Admission is by donation.

The Alpha Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met March 4 at Butler of Marion.

Fifteen members were present. Following devotions by Rowena Olsen, Mary Olson shared an informational eulogy of Margaret Haucke, an honorary member of the chapter.

Anita Boese and Pauline Holub presented the program on hobbies called, “Sharing Our Passions.”

Flint Hills REC will meet March 21

The 66th annual meeting of the Flint Hills Rural Electric Cooperative will be at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 21, at the Herington Community Building.

Four trustees will be elected for a three-year term in addition to the presentation of other business and reports.

The following candidates have ben nominated: District 1, Dale Andres and Dale Wiltfong, both of Alta Vista; District 2, Gary Burton of White City and Glen Schwartz of Alta Vista; District 3, Gus Hamm of Tampa and Daniel Frantz of Durham; District 4, Allen Pankratz of Hillsboro and Maurice Meirowsky of Peabody.

Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. with a free meal served until 6:30 p.m. Lana’s Dance Studio will entertain at 6:30. Numerous prizes will be awarded at the close of the meeting based on member registration.

R.J. Bartel family to mark 90th birthday

The children of Roland “R.J.” Bartel are planning a 90th birthday open house for him from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, March 19, in the lower level of the Park Villa Apartments, Hillsboro.

Friends and family are invited to come.
