AREA BOYS BASKETBALL
Olpe 46, Goessel 39-Goessel got off to a slow start Saturday night in Burrton in the finals of the Class 1A regional against Olpe and never recovered.
Olpe led 27-11 by halftime.
Nathan Ensz led the Bluebirds with nine points and Brett Goerzen added eight.
Goessel (17-6) will play in the El Dorado sub-state on Thursday night and battle Madison (14-9) with game time set for 7:30 p.m.
Goessel 51, Little River 44-Goessel moved into the Burrton regional finals with a win over the Redskins Thursday night.
Goessel led 24-19 at halftime but trailed 32-30 heading into the final eight minutes.
A Travis Buller 3-point basket gave Goessel the lead back early in the fourth quarter.
Buller led the Bluebirds with 14 points while Garrett Hiebert added 11.
Olpe 63, Centre 38- The Centre Cougars’ basketball season ended Thursday with a Burrton regional loss to top-seeded Olpe.
The game was tied 10-all after one quarter, but Olpe out scored Centre 38-15 in the second and third quarters to secure the win.
Alfonse Klenda led Centre with 14 points and Bryant Gutsch added 11 as Centre cfinished with a record of 8-13.
Centre 63, Burrton 47-Centre kept its season alive Monday night with a win over Burrton in the opening round of the Class 1A regional tournament at Burrton.
Centre led 32-20 by halftime.
Dustin Burnett poured in 34 points on 13-for-19 shooting from the field, including four of six from the 3-point arc.
Burnett also led the Cougars with 11 rebounds while dishing out four assists and making four steals.
Centre hit 25 of 48 from the field (52 percent) and seven of 10 (70 percent) from the 3-point line.
Bennington 52, Canton-Galva 39-Canton-Galva wrapped up the regular season Tuesday night with a loss to the Bulldogs.
Canton-Galva led 24-20 at halftime but Bennington outscored the Eagles 32-15 in second half.
Ted Regehr led the Eagles with 11 points while Seth Moddelmog added nine.
AREA GIRLS BASKETBALL
Olpe 77, Centre 36-Centre met it’s match and then some Saturday night in the finals of the Burrton regional.
Centre trailed 32-18 by halftime and saw Olpe outscore them 22-7 in the third quarter to remove any doubt about the outcome.
Centre made only 26 of 56 (28 percent) shots while Olpe made 31 of 63 (49 percent).
Megan Gutsch led the Cougar with nine points and eight rebounds.
Centre committed 31 turnovers compared to 22 for Olpe.
Centre (17-6) moves on to the El Dorado sub-state to battle St. Paul (19-3) at 6 p.m. Friday.
Centre 52, Burrton 37- The Cougars advanced to the Burrton regional finals with a win over the host Chargers.
Megan Gutsch led Centre with 15 pints as the Cougars hit 21 of 60 from the field (35 percent) while limiting Burrton to just eight of 55 (15 percent).
Gutsch led Centre with 11 of the Cougars’ 41 rebounds.
The Cougar defense forced 43 turnovers. Selena Seifert had six steals and Teaira Turner added five of Centre’s 31.
Bennington 31, Canton-Galva 26-The Eagles closed out the regular season Tuesday night at Bennington.
Trailing 8-4 after one quarter, Canton-Galva outscored Bennington 13-2 in the second quarter to take a 17-10 halftime lead.
But the fourth quarter proved to be the Eagle’s undoing as Bennington used a 15-4 advantage to capture the victory.
Kaitlyn Bressie led the Eagles with nine points.
