The Hillsboro basketball teams took a pair of double-digit victories from Marion Friday night at Brown Gymnasium.

The Trojan girls used 64 percent shooting to beat the Warriors, 65-45. The lead was only 12-9 after one quarter, but six points from Tina Frick in the second period fueled a 20-11 burst that put Hillsboro ahead 32-20 by halftime. Hillsboro took control of the game in the third quarter with an 11-1 run through the first 4:25 of the period.

Frick finished with a team-high 15 points while JuliAnne Chisholm and Hannah Marsh each added 12 for Hillsboro, which improves to 7-6 for the season and 3-2 in league play.

A 10-0 run in the final 2 minutes of the third period finally put some distance between the Hillsboro boys and Marion, lifting Hillsboro a long way toward its 55-41 victory.

A 3-point basket by Kyle Kroeker with 3.5 seconds left in the opening period put Hillsboro on top, 13-12, at the first break. Jeremy Vondenkamp started the second period with a basket to give Marion its last lead of the evening as Hillsboro launched a 10-0 run into the middle of the second period and led 28-21 after two quarters.

Four unanswered free throws by Marion midway through the third quarter pulled the Warriors to within 32-26 with 2:44 left in the period. But a 16-footer by Kroeker at the 1:56 mark ignited the 10-0 streak, with six points coming from the Trojan senior guard. Hillsboro suddenly led at the end of the period, 42-26.

The two teams battled evenly down the stretch as Hillsboro claimed the 14-point win and improved its record to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the MCAA.

Kroeker finished with a team-high 20 points while Lucas Hamm and Wade Weibert pitched in 15 and 10 points, respectively.
