Correct spelling ‘bee’ an elementary task for HES competitors

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DON RATZLAFF
Ashley Bartel (left) listens quietly as Katie Claassen concentrates on the correct spelling of “residential” during the annual Hillsboro Elementary School spelling bee Friday morning. The two fifth-graders were the sole survivors of the 23 representatives from grades one through five who started the competition. After Katie faltered on the word, Ashley spelled it correctly, then spelled “atmosphere” right to claim first place. The two girls will represent HES at the county spelling bee next month in Marion.
