Trojan boys earn berth in Trojan Classic title game

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DR
The Hillsboro boys used one of their better complete games of the season to defeat Belleville, 61-40, in the semifinals of the Trojan Classic on Friday evening (Jan. 20).

Hillsboro started a little shaky, committing six turnovers in the early going. But a tough defensive effort kept the Buffaloes from taking advantage of the mistakes. Hillsboro led after one quarter, 10-6.

By halftime, Hillsboro had extended its lead to 26-14, thanks in part to 13 points from Wade Weibert, who used his size and strength to rule the paint.

The Trojans then took command of the game in the third quarter with some firepower from Kyle Kroeker, who chipped in nine points on back-toback 3-pointers midway through the period and then a traditional three-point play in the final seconds to give HHS a 49-31 lead at the final break.

The Trojans established their largest lead of the night at 55-31 when Lucas Hamm nailed a 13-footer with 6:10 to go.

Weibert finished with 15 points to lead Hillsboro while Hamm added 13 and Kroeker 11.

The win improved Hillsboro’s record to 9-2. The Trojans will take on Riley County at 8 p.m. for the tournament championship. Riley defeated the No. 1 seed, Thomas More Prep earlier on Friiday, 62-53.
