The positive evolution of Leadership Marion County continues with a change in format to half-day classes instead of full days. But the organization’s relatively new and developing emphasis on “servant leadership” training is a fresh and needed focus in a political world where a hard-nosed, self-possessed style is the more familiar norm for leaders.
Servant leadership aspires to lead by meeting needs, not forcing patrons into submission. It listens before it decides and puts the good of the whole ahead of personal advancement. Being a “servant” is often seen as a weakness. But it truly takes strength to lay aside the sledgehammer of authority to pick up a basin and towel. -DR
