Area boys basketball teams prepare for tournament week

AREA BOYS BASKETBALL

Centre 50, Herington 45-Dustin Burnett scored 15 points, Bryant Gutsch 12 and Alfonse Klenda 10 as Centre came from behind to defeat Herington Friday night in Lost Springs.

Centre trailed 30-27 at halftime and 36-34 after three quarters before out scoring Herington 16-9 in the decisive fourth quarter.

The Cougars made 18 of 51 field goal attempts (35 percent), but only one of 11 from beyond the 3-point line.

Tad Remy led the Cougars with three assists while Klenda pulled down 10 free throws followed closely by Kevin Mueller with nine. Centre made 13 of 20 free throws.

Hutchinson Trinity 74, Canton-Galva 40-Canton-Galva had trouble getting their offense untracked and trailed 32-12 by halftime Friday night in Canton.

Seth Moddelmog led the Eagles with 12 points and Joel Hardman added 11.

Goessel 37, Berean Academy 26-Goessel scored only two points in the first quarter, but rallied to tie the game at 16 by halftime before pulling away in the second half.

Jordan Voth led the Bluebirds with 12 points in the win Tuesday night at Elbing.

Remington 59, Canton-Galva 41-The Eagles’s scoring troubles continued Tuesday night at Remington.

Canton-Galva trailed 28-14 by halftime. Seth Moddelmog led the Eagles with 11 points.

Sedgwick 76, Peabody-Burns 71-After the game was tied at 32 at halftime, Peabody-Burns took a one-point lead into the fourth quarter. But Sedgwick prevailed Tuesday night in Peabody.

Derek Benson led the Warriors with 17 points while Jason Unruh added 11.

Centre 60, Wakefield 53- Dustin Burnett scored 27 points for Centre Tuesday night in Lost Springs. Burnett made 11 of 22 shots from the floor plus three of four free throws while hauling in a team-high 12 rebounds.

Centre trailed 28-25 at halftime but took a 43-42 lead into the fourth quarter.

Centre made 21 of 66 field-goal attempts (32 percent), including four of 14 (29 percent) from behind the 3-point line.

The Cougars got 16 points and seven rebounds from Bryant Gutsch. Seth Jirak added six steals.

Goessel 57, Inman 54-The Bluebirds handed Inman its first loss of the season Friday night at Inman. Goessel led 26-15 at halftime.

Peabody-Burns 47, Little River 46-Little River led 24-19 at halftime but were outscored 16-10 by in the third quarter as the Warriors held on for the one-point win.


AREA GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Centre 72, Herington 60-Four Centre players scored in double digits Friday night, led by Teaira Turner’s 19 points.

Alyssa Luna added 14 points, Selena Seifert 13 and Jackie Klenda 11 as Centre hit 28 of 64 (43 percent) of its field-goal attempts. Herington made 22 for 58 (37 percent).

Luna pulled down a team-high nine rebounds as Centre held a 36-35 edge. Turner accounted for eight of Centre’s 23 steals. Herington committed 29 turnovers.

Hutchinson Trinity 62, Canton-Galva 23-Trinity jumped to a 30-10 lead by halftime Friday night in Canton. Dani Bair led the Eagles with seven points.

Berean Academy 58, Goessel 41-After leading 16-13 after one quarter and 29-27 at halftime, Goessel faltered in the second half. Rinda Duerksen led the Bluebirds with 14 points at Elbing Tuesday night.

Remington 41, Canton-Galva 24-Canton-Galva trailed 21-8 by halftime Tuesday night at Remington. Alyssa Koehn led Canton-Galva with eight points.

Centre 66, Wakefield 36- Centre exploded for 24 second-quarter points Tuesday night at Lost Springs and led 39-15 by halftime.

Selena Seifert led the Cougars with 17 points. Megan Gutsch added 12 and Jackie Klenda 11.

Centre made 28 of 70 (40 percent) of its field-goal attempts while limiting Wakefield to 26 percent (23-45).

Gutsch hauled in 14 rebounds as Centre out-rebounded Wakefield, 38-34. The Cougar came up with 26 steals while Wakefield committed 36 turnovers.

Gutsch had five steals and Seifert and Samantha Alvarez each had four.
