Pruning trees first step toward new fruit

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN TOM STOPPEL
Zane Unrau of Goessel donned a stocking hat and gloves to prune fruit trees at Miller’s Garden of Eatin’ along North Ash Street in Hillsboro last week. Unrau, a student at Kansas State University, began the task of trimming more than 500 trees in the orchard over his holiday break. The orchard includes nearly 350 apple trees, 150 peach trees and several plum, pear and cherry trees. Orchard owners said it’s the perfect time to trim fruit trees, which will begin producing fruit available for public sale around the first week of July.
