Field set for 12th annual Trojan Classic

For the second consecutive year, eight boys’ teams and six girls’ team will comprise the field for next week’s 12th annual Trojan Classic basketball tournament.

Action begins Monday with games at Hillsboro and Marion.

Besides the two hosting schools, three other schools will bring both boys’ and girls’ teams to the tournament, which runs concludes Saturday. Those schools are Riley County, Wamego and Belleville.

The Riley County girls are the Class 3A defending state champions.

Filling the remaining berths for the boys’ traditional championship-bracket format are Sunrise Christian Academy, Hesston and the Class 3A defending state champions, Thomas More Prep.

Cair Paravel, a private school from the Topeka area, will take the sixth berth in the girls’ tournament.

With six teams, the girls will first play in two three-team pools. The results of pool play will determine the matchups for first-, third- and fifth-place games on Saturday.

Seeding for the tournament was based on team records as of Jan. 10.

The Free Press will post that information on its Web site as soon as it receives from tournament director Max Heinrichs, who is activites director for USD 410.
