The first Hillsboro High School chess tournament came to a conclusion Wednesday with championship and third-place matches taking place in the Wiebe Media Center. Senior Clint Schneider (left photo and, in background of photo above) outsmarted and outlasted 31 other entrants to win the championship match against junior Zach Magnuson. Senior Victor Rogers (left , foreground) claimed third place by defeating sophomore Ben Bosworth in a match that started around 11:30 and had to be continued after a school. Bosworth played a key role in the formation of the tournament. A casual conversation between Bosworth and library aide Janet Whisenhunt led to the start of casual chess matches in the media center with a few friends. Interest grew to the point where as many as 10 games were going on at once, surrounded by a dozen or more spectators. Whisenhunt said a second tournament is planned for spring if interest in the game continues.
