Winners off the field, too

We like being champs on the field, but to it with strength of character, too, is a feat worth applauding.

Congratulations are in order for the Tabor College football team and its coaching staff, headed by Mike Gardner. Winning a second straight conference title and climbing to No. 6 in the national polls is still unfamiliar territory for many of us who have followed the Bluejay football fortunes through some pretty dismal decades.

What we have appreciated most about the rise of this program with the arrival of Tim McCarty, and then continued after his departure by Gardner, is that these coaches have proven that a team can win by demanding quality of character as highly as quality athletic skills in their recruits.

Three cheers for these players and coaches. Thanks for being winners, not just winning.
