AREA PREP FOOTBALL- Eagles still undefeated as they enter playoffs

Canton-Galva 60, Sedgwick 26. The Eagles, ranked fourth in Class 2A, improved to 9-0 with an easy win over Sedgwick Thursday night at Canton.

After a wild first quarter, the Eagles led 20-14. Ted Regehr hit Derek Bair with a 42-yard pass and Seth Moddelmog had touchdown runs of 10 and 23 for the Eagles.

Canton-Galva exploded for 33 points in the second quarter.

Moddelmog scored on a 25-yard ran, Stephen Jowers on a 30-yard run, Regehr hit Bair for a 16-yard touchdown pass, Joel Hardman scored from six yards out and Stephen Jowers added an eight-yard run.

Canton-Galva closed its scoring in the third quarter on a Moddelmog run of 15 yards.

The Eagles rolled up 23 first downs in the game while rushing for 441 yards on 46 carries. They added an 146 yards through the air on 8-for-11 passing.

Moddelmog accounted for 229 yards on 14 carries and Jowers added 93 yards on seven carries.

Bair led all Eagle receivers with six catches for 118 yards.

With the win, the Eagles move on to the state playoffs with a perfect record.

They were scheduled to host Olpe on Tuesday.

Goessel 36, Hartford 28. The Bluebirds punched their ticket for the state playoffs Thursday with their win over Hartford.

Goessel rolled up 264 yards rushing on 45 carries and added 140 yards through the air on 13-of-16 passing by quarterback Garrett Hiebert.

Justin Fensky scored from 12 yards out to give Goessel an early 8-0 lead.

After Hartford cut the lead to 8-6, Brett Goerzen hauled in a Hiebert pass from 16 yards out to increase the lead to 14-6 early in the second quarter.

Fensky extended the lead later in the quarter on a three-yard run to make the score 22-6 before Hartford cut the margin to 22-14 by halftime.

Hiebert added a 60-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to make the score 28-14, but Hartford answered with a score to slice the lead to 28-20.

When Hartford scored on a 1-yard run later in the third period, the game was tied at 28.

But Goessel scored on a one-yard run by Hiebert in the fourth quarter to win the game.

Fensky led the Bluebirds with 131 yards on 20 carries. Hiebert added 80 yards on 13 carries, Travis Buller 31 yards on eight carries and Adam Goering 22 yards on four carries.

Hiebert connected with five receivers. Chad Schrag caught three balls for 42 yards.

On defense, Bubba Holder had 14 tackles, Kyle Unruh 12 tackles, Goering and Buller 10 each and Kurtis Duerksen eight.

With the victory, Goessel improved to 7-2 overall and will play Southern Coffey County on Tuesday at Leroy.
