Hillsboro Elementary School students find their way to fire safety

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN
Hillsboro Elementary School teacher Michele Berens crawls on hands and knees alongside student Tia Rivera during a training exercise created by the Hillsboro Fire Department for Fire Prevention Week on Thursday. Fire Chief Ben Steketee and the other kindergarten students and teachers watch attentively as Tia makes her way from her bed, beneath these obstacles and out a side window after checking the bedroom door for heat. Once students made their way through the course and found the family meeting place, they each received a prize from Fire Pup. Accepting her prize in the right photo is Taylor Helmer of Traci Boldt’s class. Taylor’s father, Todd, was one of the HFD volunteer firefighters who participated in the event in full uniform and gear.
