TC’s Gardner to speak to chamber today

Mike Gardner, head coach of the 11th-ranked Tabor College Bluejays football team, will speak at the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce luncheon at noon today, Oct. 5, in the city building.

The lunch costs $6 per person and will be provided by Panhandlers Catering Co.

Under Gardner, the Bluejays are off to a 4-0 start and ranked 17th in the NAIA.

Gardner was featured as one of the 80 hot coaches for 2005 in the August edition of American Football Monthly. Ten coaches from high school to the professional level were profiled, with Gardner as the only NAIA coach selected from Kansas.

Gardner is a graduate of Baker University and completed graduate studies at Hastings College in Nebraska. He also serves as an assistant professor of physical education at Tabor.

Borscht, chili supper Oct. 8 in Goessel

“Visions from the Past” will be featured at the Mennonite Heritage Museum Borscht and Chili Supper Fund Raiser on Saturday, Oct. 8, at the museum grounds in Goessel.

From 5:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., individuals will portray what it was like to live in the Schroeder Barn, Friesen House, Krause House and South Bloomfield School and Pioneer Room in the Immigrant House.

Mayleen Vinson will display her research and answer questions about the 16 one-room schools surrounding the Goessel community.

A special prop will allow people to have a photo taken in the “Mennonite Gothic Style” for only $10.

Randolph A. Schmidt will provide answers to “How did that machine work?” about the machines located in the Wheat Palace.

Chili and borscht soup with trimmings will be served from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Prep School.

Donations will be accepted.

Reenactor to perform

at Peabody program

The Peabody Victorian Revival Society will present a Victorian tea and program Saturday Nov. 5 at 1:30 p.m. in the Peabody-Burns Elementary School multi-purpose room.

Historian and reenactor Jacque Stroud from Topeka will present “The Children’s Hour” a program featuring vintage children’s clothing, music, poetry and literature from the 1860s.

Guests are encouraged to dress in period clothing.

All proceeds benefit the Peabody Senior Center facade renovation project.

Ames to give concert

at Trinity Oct. 9

Contemporary Christian artist Christopher Ames will give a free concert at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ramona.

The concert is part of Trinity’s 100th anniversary celebration. Other events include a puppet presentation at 10 a.m, church service at 10:30 a.m., beef dinner at noon, remarks by former pastors at 3 p.m. and balloon release at 4:30 p.m.

Storytime starts Oct. 7 at Marion city library

Fall storytime sessions for children ages 3 to 6 will begin Oct. 7 and continue until Nov. 18 at Marion City Library.

Storytimes will run from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday.

“Under the Top” will be the fall’s theme with circus stories, activities and crafts.

Frontier Day Oct. 8

for kids with cancer

Frontier Day, a free activity for Kansas kids who have or have had cancer, will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at Harvey County East Park near Newton.

Children and their families can enjoy old-fashioned covered wagon rides, pioneer games, crafts and a chuckwagon barbecue beginning at 4 p.m.

Free T-shirts will be given to all children in attendance.

The Boy Scouts of Marion will be “Scouting for Food” Oct. 8 for the Marion County Food Bank.

Book group Oct. 7

at Hillsboro library

The Hillsboro Public Library discussion group will meet at 9 a.m. Oct. 7 at the library.

The book for discussion will be “The Color of Water” by James McBride. It is not necessary to have read the book in advance to attend the meeting.

Werner speaks at Oct. Chat and Dine

Marion County Lake residents attending Chat and Dine Oct. 1 listened to Sharon Werner, chief attorney of the consumer fraud and economic crime division of Sedgwick County, speak on precautions to protect individuals from fraud and economic scams.

She made specific recommendations regarding unsolicited mail, telemarketing scams, telephone solicitations, Internet sales and auctions, buying used automobiles and limitations of the three-day right to cancel and purchase.

Recognized for first-time attendance were recent lake residents Jim and Peggi Wilson. Those with October birthdays were Johelen Fincham and Troy Reno, guest of parents Judy and Wayne Reno. Celebrating their 49th wedding anniversary are Nadine and Delmar Iseli.

Winner of the painting by Judy Reno was Neysa Eberhard.

The season’s final Chat and Dine at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 5 will be a soup and chili supper, with the coordinating committee as soup cooks. Lake residents are encouraged to bring their soup spoons.

Jon Stockham, representative of Baker’s Life, will present a program on the new Medicare prescription program, long-term care insurance and senior investing.

Hosting in November are Cara and Jerald Stockdale, Martha and Dick Pracht and Margie and Jerry Richards.

Farmerettes to meet Oct. 10 at Penner’s

Farmerettes will meet at 2 p.m. Oct. 10 at the home of Ruth Ann Penner.

Penner will give a lesson on cooking for one or two.

The role call will be to name favorite season.

Driver safety class

set for Oct. 17-18

The Hillsboro Senior Center will be sponsoring the AARP Driver Safety Program from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 17 and 18.

Not limited to senior citizens, the class is intended as a refresher course for all motorists. Drivers who complete the course can earn a reduction in vehicle insurance premiums.

Reimbursement for program-related materials will be collected from each participant.

The Goessel Booster Club is sponsoring a tailgate party from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 7 inside the football stadium.

A Mexican meal will be served.

Trap shoot set for Oct. 30 in Tampa

The Moffitt Crandall Post 372 American Legion annual trap shoot will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 30 and Nov. 13 in Tampa.

Participants can win hams or bacons and support the American Legion.
