The Marion County Commission Friday, Sept. 30, held a $690,040.23 payday session that included news once more that a record sales tax had been collected.

The tax collection for July sales was at $41,299.30, the highest July tax recorded in seven years of collections. The taxes were turned into the state in August, and distributed to the county in September.

The good news was tempered by continuing high fuel prices as reflected in the area fuel bids for road and bridge.

Cardie Oil Inc. of Tampa received the fuel bid for areas 1 and 2, bidding $2,075.20 for 800 gallons of diesel at $2.5940 a gallon in Area 1 and $5,555.60 for 2,150 gallons of diesel at $2.5840 in Area 2.

Cooperative Grain & Supply of Hillsboro received the fuel bid for areas 3 and 4, bidding $4,640.40 for 1,800 gallons diesel at $2.578 a gallon in Area 3 and $4,658.40 for 1,800 gallons diesel at $2.588 a gallon in Area 4.

The competing bids for CG&S were $2.598 a gallon for $2,078.40 in Area 1 and $2.598 a gallon for $5,585.70 in Area 2, and for Cardie were $2.6140 a gallon for $4,705.20 in Area 3 and $2.614 a gallon for $4,705.20 in Area 4.

Road and Bridge Director Jim Herzet announced Steve Hudson as the new road foreman for the county.

The commissioners authorized sending a letter of understanding to the accounting firm of Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd for services in aiding the ambulance department.

They met in executive sessions with County Appraiser Cindy Magill, County Attorney Susan Robson and Herzet for personnel.

Commissioners met one more time with Robson for attorney-client reasons.
