Area cross country teams enjoy successful outings

All five area cross-country teams in the Free Press circulation area competed at area meets Thursday.

Peabody-Burns, Goessel-The Warriors and Bluebirds competed at the Peabody-Burns Invitational. PBHS took advantage of the home course and won the team boys’ title; Andrew Topham topped the 41-runner field with a time of 18 minutes, 20 seconds.

Also medaling for the Warriors were Jacob Wolf (seventh, 20:17), Duane Unruh (eighth, 20:34) and Robert Rossberg (13th, 21:04). Also competing for PBHS were Ryan Wiebe (24th, 21:56) and Jesse Riggs (38th, 23:47).

Competing for the junior varsity were Jake Middleton (second, 22:28), Kendall Wiebe (ninth, 23:13), Ethan Riggs (18th, 23:58), Seth Methvin (23rd, 25:08), Dane Lau (28th, 26:11) and Joe Zappone (34th, 28:49).

The PBHS girls placed sixth, led by Alyssa Carter who medaled with a 15th-place finish in 15:12.

Also running for the Warriors were Ashley Elliott (22nd, 15:48), Jennifer Schmeling (26th, 16:28) and Jacqueline Benjamin (30th, 17:52).

In JV race, Samantha Pickens (ninth, 19:34) and Erica Frederick (11th, 21:59) both medaled.

For Goessel, Evan Fast was the lone varsity medalist, placing seventh in 20:17.

Also competing for the Bluebirds were Kellen Jenkins (25th, 22:03), Brady Peters (26th, 22:09), Cameron Voth (30th, 22:28) and Jake Schrag (38th 24:36).

In the JV, Casey Wedel (third, 22:31) and Anthony Esau (15th, 23:39) both medaled. Also competing were Chris Johnston (21st, 24:14), Travis Duerksen (26th, 25:23), Sam Lehrman (30th, 26:20), Matt Johnston (35th, 30:15) and Ryan Goertzen (36th, 34:34).

For the Bluebird girls, Janessa Wedel (17th, 15:19) medaled in the varsity race while Jitka Vitova (third, 16:36) medaled in the JV race.

Centre-Competing at the Leon-Bluestem Invitational, Centre’s Allie Wills brought home a 29th and Brittany Owens 30th.

Canton-Galva-The Eagles competed at the Stafford Invitational. Medaling for the Eagles was Brandon Shannon, who placed fifth in the junior-senior race in 18:57.

Also competing in that race were Travis Myers (19th, 20:48), Joseph Unruh (20th, 20:50) and Andy Otte (36th, 22:28).

Riley Nigh placed 44th in the freshman race in 23:39.

In the junior-senior girls’ race, Alyssa Koehn medaled by placing 10th in 13:57. Others in the race were Kelly Arendt (23rd, 16:27) and Sheri Volkman (35th, 17:35).

Medaling in the freshman-sophomore race was Caitlin Nelson who placed third in 13:57.

Others in the race included Lynn Volkman (24th, 16:23) and Morgan Ashpole (32nd, 20:40).

“All of the kids improved their times from last week except for two, and they were close to those times,” Silsby said. “Brandon and Caitlin continue to run well and lead the team.

“Alyssa really came on, finishing 42 seconds faster than last week and is starting to run like I hoped she would,” Silsby added. “Joseph and Lynn are two more that have shown a lot of improvement over the last couple of weeks and are going to be contributors to the team by the end of the season.”
