Owners close Marion Lumber Co. but seek buyer for business

Owner Jim Richmond verified this week that he and wife Violet closed Marion Lumber Co. Inc., at 150 W. Main, effective last Monday.

They would have been in business at that location for 40 years on Aug. 1, he said.

Richmond said they decided to close the lumber yard because they wanted to retire. Sale of the lumber yard appears imminent, but if it should fall through, he said they will continue to try to sell it.

Until it is sold, Richmond said he would rather not talk more about it.

He said they bought the business from Norma and Harold Woerz in 1965. The Woerz family had bought the yard from Jake Barrett in 1960 or 1961, “but I don’t know how long he had it,” Richmond said.

Richmond said he remembered Marion having as many as three retail lumber outlets in the past. But the town isn’t quite the commercial center it was then, and it is harder for small businessmen to get money now, he said.
