Moran makes county stop at Goessel

First District Congressman Jerry Moran answered questions before some 40 constituents during his Marion County stop at Goessel’s Mennonite Heritage Museum.

Moran, accompanied by staff member Dorothy Hughes, covered a variety of topics during his hour-long appearance.

Moran said one of his goals is to highlight Kansas history, focusing on tourism and travel.

“We want people who are traveling through Kansas to stop and see what our state has to offer,” Moran said. “Hopefully, some of those people will want to return to Kansas-or better yet, find a way to make a living and move here permanently.”

Moran said his “Big First” district, which includes 69 of Kansas’s 105 counties, encompasses nearly three-fourths of Kansas geographically, but only one-fourth of its population.

Moran said his two main goals as a congressman are to encourage prosperity and to do what’s good for the future of Kansas.

Additional topics covered by Moran included opening the borders of Cuba to U.S. imports, the new federal farm program, the war in Iraq, public education and religious faith in politics.

Moran said the average age of farmers in Kansas is now 581/2 years old.

“If we don’t provide a better opportunity for our next generation to return to the family farm, we’re going to lose our young farmers,” he said. “I hope it never comes to that.”
