30 youth participate in first goat show

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN
Thirty young dairy goat owners from across Kansas brought more than 80 representatives of eight breeds of dairy goats to Hillsboro for the first Pride of the Plains Youth Dairy Goat Show, May 27 and 28.

In addition to competing for championship prizes-breed specific, stained-glass silhouette rings-trophies and ribbons, the young exhibitors, age 20 years and under, had a chance to win monster cookies in a Goat Quiz Bowl, big chocolate bars for participating in a management and tool identification test, double-clip leads in a five-class judging contest, and gold dollars plus ice cream cone coupons for the showmanship competitions.

Raffle doelings and silent auction dairy goats were also a highlight of the weekend event, with winners taking home top quality animals donated by several prestigious breeders from Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri.

“Judging by the many smiles we saw on kids’ faces, it was a very successful effort,” said Roberta Wilkenson, Hayesville, one of the show committee members.

The “Best Senior Doe in Show” award went to Grady Stultz, Hillsboro, with his Oberhasli doe, Vassajara’s Prudence.

Lindsey Morford, Hillsboro, won the “Best Junior Doe in Show” award with her Recorded Grade entry, The McMorford’s Evening Star.

Judging classes of dairy goats were provided by: Estes and Virginia Robinson, Hutchinson, Toggenburg doelings; Stultz family, Gravel-Ends Ranch, Alpine dry yearlings and Alpine doelings; Dennis Huxman, Pocomoke Farm, Lehigh, Nubian milkers; and the Booton family, Lehigh, Nubian doelings.

The Goat Management and Tool Identification Contest was put together by Lindsey Morford, Hillsboro, and more than 20 participants won candy bars for their superior skills in that area.

Hillsboro State Bank and McDonald’s of Hillsboro contributed toward the prizes, and Citizens State Bank of Goessel donated an exhibition tent for show use.
