EDITORIAL: A course worth pursuing

Give Parkside Homes credit for boldly following their conviction that there is a better way to care for the frail elderly in our communities. The groundbreaking Thursday for the start of a multi-million-dollar, three-year retooling of its facilities definitely is a response to the proverbial dare to “put your money where your mouth is.” We commend them for their courage and vision.

This project is the first of its kind to emerge in Kansas and, we’re told, has attracted the attention of folks in the nursing-home field nationwide.

The effort to move from an institutional approach to elder care to more of a family approach is long overdue. It appears to be the trend for the future, and we hope it succeeds. Wise are the institutions who pursue this course aggressively, even if the prospect of “culture change” appears daunting. It’s the right thing to do. -DR
