Led by Amy Duerksen’s state-record performance in the clean, Hillsboro High School’s three-member girls’ team placed third overall at the 2005 Class 3A Powerlifting Championships at Marion April 2.

Divided into weight classes, athletes compete in three events: squat, bench press and clean. In addition to competing for medals in each event, the amount of weight lifted in all three events is combined for a total outcome.

The Hillsboro girls finished with 22 points, which left them trailing Ellsworth with 36 and Beloit with 26. Athletes from 19 schools competed.

Duerksen finished second overall in the 165-pound weight class with a total weight of 510. The senior set a state record of 170 pounds in the clean, she lifted 200 pounds in the squat and bench pressed 140 pounds.
