Hillsboro tennis team places 3rd at Conway

The Hillsboro High School tennis team opened its season Thursday with a third-place finish in a tough quadrangular meet at Conway Springs.

The host team, the defending Class 3-2-1A champions, won the team title with 27 team points. South Barber, who finished third at state last spring, placed second at Conway Springs with 17 points. Hillsboro was third with 10 points and Circle fourth with 6.

In No. 1 singles, Robert Jost of Hillsboro defeated Phillip Zimmerman of Circle 8-7 (8-6), then lost to Brandon Ewertz of Conway Springs 1-8 and to Corey Hamm of South Barber 1-8.

In No. 2 singles, Caleb Barkman lost to Eric Molz of South Barber 5-8, and to Scott Matzen of Conway Springs 1-8 before defeating Austin Towne of Circle 8-7 (7-1).

In No. 1 doubles, Hillsboro’s Kyle Kroeker and Macy Fadenrecht lost to Joel Forester and Chad Forester of South Barber 4-8, and to Darren Rassmussen and Wes May of Conway Springs 3-8 before defeating Matt Aitchison and Sam Aitchison of Circle 8-2.

In No. 2 doubles, Peter Fast and Ricky Johnson lost to Josh Myers and Clint Gates of South Barber 8-5, and to Matt Pauly and Maris Winter of Conway Springs 1-8 before defeating Harris Butler and Ben Reed of Circle 8-3.

Coming-The Trojans were scheduled to compete at the Smoky Valley Invitational on Tuesday, then will play host to the Trojan Invitational on Thursday. Matches will begin at the Sports Complex at 3 p.m.
