The Hillsboro basketball teams ended their regular seasons with resounding wins over Hoisington Tuesday night in Hillsboro.
The girls’ 34-21 win was as close at it was only because the Trojans had an off shooting night. But Hillsboro made up for the offensive sluggishness with some brilliant defense as they limited the Cardinals to 9-for-48 shooting on the night.
Hillsboro led only 9-8 after one quarter and 15-11 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, Hillsboro had expanded its lead to eight points, 23-15. It wasn’t until midway through the final period that Hillsboro looked sharp on offense, surging for eight straight points to blow the game open.
JuliAnne Chisholm led the team with 14 points and, unofficially, recorded a triple double in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots. Hannah Marsh and Amy Duerksen each added nine points for HHS, who improved to 13-7 overall and nailed down third place in the MCAA with a 9-2 record.
The Hillsboro boys, meanwhile, responded to their first loss of the season on Saturday night with one of their best start-to-finish performances of the season. The Trojans led 19-8 after one quarter, 35-13 at halftime and then blew the lid off in the third quarter with a 31-6 run. The fourth quarter was played with a continuous clock and bench players.
Patrick Harrison led the Trojan attack with 16 points, Derek Hamm and Lucas Hamm each added 11 and Eric Weinbrenner 10.
With the win, Hillsboro improved to 19-1 overall and won the MCAA title with a 10-1 record.
Seniors honored tonight for the Trojans were: Amy Duerksen, Emily Ratzlaff, Marissa Diener and Sarah Prieb for the girls, and Derek Hamm, Eric Weinbrenner, Daniel Deckert and Patrick Harrison for the boys.
