Trojan wrestlers take both ends of Halstead double-dual

The Hillsboro High School wrestling team took both ends of a double dual in Halstead on Thursday. The Trojans defeated Halstead, 49-22, then defeated Chase County, 47-30.

Winning on the mat for the Trojans against the home team were: Zach Magnuson, who defeated Aaron Porter 13-0 at 103 pounds; Frankie Martin, who pinned David Romerein at 112; Grady Stultz, who pinned Jacob Clark at 135; Andrew Bina, who pinned Josiah Daniels at 145; and Matt Brown, who defeated Eric Toler 11-6 at 152.

Winning by default were Roc Johnson at 125, Ben Schaefer at 160, Zach Luthi at 189 and Kurtis Shaw at 275.

Four Trojans lost their matches. Zach Jost was defeated 16-6 by Josh Walton at 119; Eric Cress lost 7-5 to Luke Thibault at 135; Sean Leihy lost 12-6 to Echko Raudon Bayar; Daniel Roble was pinned by Dustin Foster at 171, and C.J. Shaw was pinned by Steven Foster at 215.

“It was nice to avenge an earlier loss to Halstead,” coach Scott O’Hare said. “They beat us at Marion the first dual of the season. This dual really shows the progress we have made as a team.”

Against Chase County, the Trojans won six matches on the mat. Martin pinned Ross Eidman at 112, Johnson pinned Aaron Wold at 125, Cress pinned Nathan Phipps at 135, Leihy pinned Andrew Sisson at 140, Brown pinned Garrett Boyd at 152, and Schaefer defeated Jesse Boyd 16-0.

Winning by default were Jost and Stultz.

Losing on the mat were: Magnuson, who was pinned by Brendon Harshman; Bina, who lost 10-5 to Seth Wessell; Roble, who was pinned by Lee Heinen; C.J. Shaw, who was pinned by Jared Whitcomb; and Kurtis Shaw, who lost to Josh Atchison 5-1.

“I was a little nervous going into this dual,” O’Hare said. “Chase County had been right in the mix of things at a number of the tournaments we had been at. They have some quality, experienced wrestlers, but we were able to win a lot of the key matches in some of the lower and middle weights to put it out of reach.”

O’Hare said he was pleased with his team’s effort at Halstead.

“We competed with a lot of intensity,” he said. “We have some fundamentals and technical things to work on, but we’re wrestlng well for this time of the season.

“We are getting to the point in the season where we really need to start polishing some things up and settling into our style of wrestling to prepare for the league and regional tournaments coming up in February.”
