Area high school girls teams complete tournament week

Centre 51, Solomon 34

Fresh off their second-place finish in the Eisenhower Tournament over the weekend, Centre defeated Solomon by 17 points on Tuesday.

Centre jumped to a 19-4 lead after one quarter and led 26-10 at halftime.

Selena Seifert led a balanced attack with 10 points. Ten Cougars scored in the game.

Berean 47, Peabody-Burns 29

The Peabody-Burns girls got off to a slow start in the opening round action of the Eli J. Walter Girls Invitational tournament last week at Elbing.

After shutting out the Warriors out in the first quarter, Berean led 19-7 at halftime, then outscored Peabody-Burns 28-20 in the second half.

Jessi Hilliard led the Warriors with 13 points.

Fairfield 62, Canton-Galva 26

Fairfield dominated Canton-Galva in the first round of the Sedgwick Girls Classic. Fairfield led 24-1 after one quarter and 40-6 by halftime.

Kylie Haines led the Eagles with nine points.

Peabody-Burns 44

Derby Home School 38

The Peabody-Burns girls rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to post a six-point win.

Jessi Hilliard led the Warriors with 15 points and Kali Alstrom added 12.

Belle Plain 45, Canton-Galva 40

The game was tied at 27 heading into the fourth quarter, but Belle Plaine inched ahead in the final 8 minutes.

Ashley Jones led the Eagles with 15 points and Kylie Haines added 10 in the defeat.

Goessel 50, Central Christian 5

The Bluebirds had no trouble with Hutchinson Central Christian in the Berean Academy Tournament last week, jumping on top 32-3 by halftime.

Candice Bailey led the way with 11 points and Kory Hiebert added 10 for Goessel.

Wichita Independent 37,

Canton-Galva 33 (OT)

Canton-Galva came up short in the battle for seventh place at the Sedgwick Girls Classic.

The Eagles took a 24-12 lead into the fourth quarter, but Independent launched a 16-4 run that sent the game into overtime.

Alyssa Koehn scored 8 points to lead Canton-Galva and Kelly Arendt added 7.

Goessel 35, Peabody-Burns 23

Goessel captured fifth place at the Berean Academy Tournament with its 12 point win over Peabody-Burns.

Leading 8-6 after one quarter, Goessel opened an 18-11 halftime lead.

Kory Hiebert led the Bluebirds with 15 points while Jessi Hilliard was high scorer for the Warriors with 9.

Solomon 54, Centre 46

Centre dropped an eight point decision on Tuesday night. The Cougars trailed 17-10 after one quarter but closed the gap to 25-24 at halftime. Solomon outscored Centre 19-13 in the fourth quarter.

Dustin Burnett scored 16 points to lead Centre. Justin Garrard added 14 points and 18 rebounds.

Centre hit only 19 of 59 field goal attempts (32 percent) including three of 21 (14 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc.

Hope 60, Centre 45

Centre dropped a hard-fought battle to Hope on Friday night despite a strong performance by Dustin Burnett.

Centre trailed 14-12 after one quarter but fell behind 31-19 by halftime.

Burnett poured in 24 points for Centre on 10-of-17 shooting, including a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the 3-point line. No other Cougar scored in double figures.

Burnett also hauled in seven rebounds and led the Cougars in steals with four.

As a team, Centre shot 18-for-49 (37 percent) from the field and 6-for-15 (40 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc.
