Hillsboro boys used an excellent first half to fuel a 68-45 win over Thomas More Prep in Friday’s Trojan Classic semifinals game.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Eric Weinbrenner with about two minutes left in the first quarter seemed to be the turning point of the ball game, as Hillsboro established a 13-8 lead and went on to lead, 15-10, at the break.

Weinbrenner sank three straight free throws after he was fouled behind the arc to start the second quarter, igniting the Trojans to an 8-2 surge and a 37-21 lead at intermission.

Hillsboro led 53-39 after three quarters and the final period turned into a free-throw fest. Hillsboro went to the line 19 times and made 11. For the game, they made 33 of 50.

Weinbrenner led Hillsboro with 18 points. Also in double figures were Kyle Kroeker with 15, Derek Hamm 13 and Lucas Hamm 11.

The win puts HHS into the title game Saturday night at 8 p.m. against either Hesston or Sunrise Academy.
