The Hillsboro Trojans opened 2005 and league play with a pair of wins against Nickerson Friday in Hillsboro.

The Trojan girls jumped to a 12-0 lead in the opening period and were never threatened en route to a 52-29 win over winless NIckerson (0-7). HHS led 26-10 at the half and 40-22 after three quarters.

JuliAnne Chisholm scored 24 to pace Hillsboro. She got support on offense from Hannah Marsh with 8, Megan Peachey 7, Amy Duerksen 6 and Emily Ratzlaff 5.

The win evens Hillsboro’s record at 3-3 for the season and gives the Trojans a 1-0 start in MCAA play.

The Trojan boys, meanwhile, looked like a team that lost practice time to an ice storm through most of three quarters of their game, but then came storming back in the final period to claim a 56-44 victory.

Nickerson (1-6) led the undefeated Trojans 15-14 after one quarter and 30-26 at halftime. The Panthers led by as many as 9 points in the second period.

But the Trojans picked up the defensive pressure in the second half, got some help from an intentional foul and technical foul called back-to-back against Nickerson midway through the third period, and then nailed down the victory.

Eric Weinbrenner scored 20 pace Hillsboro, which improved to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in MCAA play. Derek Hamm and Kyle Kroeker added 9 each, and Lucas Hamm scored 8, including a thunderous dunk in the third period.
