The Tabor College Bluejays began their second semester schedule with a 64-53 win over Hastings College Friday night in Hillsboro in the Pizza Hut Classic.

Tabor jumped out to a 17-7 lead with 11:34 remaining in the first half, but struggled the rest of the opening 20 minutes and found themselves tied at 28 at the halftime intermission.

Tied at 30 all early in the second half, an Anthony Monson field goal gave the Bluejays a lead they’d hold until the final buzzer sounded with Tabor on top by 11.

Chris Metcalf led a balanced offensive attack for Tabor with 10 points, followed by Monson with nine and Grant Brubacher with eight points.

Tabor hit just 35.3 percent of its shots in the first half but scorched the nets at a 54.5 percent clip in the second half while limiting the Broncos to just 39 percent for the game.

Tabor also won the rebounding battle 40-25 led by Scott Shaffer with seven.

With the win, Tabor improves its record to 7-6 for the season.
