Hillsboro teams sweeps Ellinwood

The Hillsboro basketball teams got their Christmas wish Friday with a pair of victories over Ellinwood to close out the pre-holiday portion of their schedule.

The Trojan girls, who have faced stiff competition this season, took out their frustration on the visiting Eagles, winning by a score of 53-30. The Trojans built an 8-0 lead through the first six minutes of the game and never trailed, although the game remained fairly close until the Trojans launched a 7-2 run to start the second half.

Leading by 12 after three quarter, Hillsboro cashed in 11 of 16 free throws in the final period to nail down the win, which improved their record to 2-3 on the seaon. Ellinwood dropped to 2-1.

The Hillsboro boys, meanwhile, withstood a never-say-die effort on the Eagles’ part to claim a 58-48 victory. Hillsboro led 20-16 after one quarter and only 30-24 at the half. By the end of three quarter, the Trojans had extended the margin to 11, then made nine of 10 free throws in the final period to keep the Eagles at bay.

Eric Weinbrenner scored 16 points and Derek Hamm and Kyle Kroeker each added 11 for Hillsboro, which improves to 5-0 for the season. Ellinwood drops to 2-1.
