Hillsboro girls, boys split with Collegiate (Dec. 14)

Hillsboro played its first home games of the season on Tuesday and came away with a loss and a win.



The Trojan girls lost to the undefeated and state-ranked Spartans, 45-34, in a game that was closer than the score would indicate. The boys, meanwhile, made 38 of 44 free throws to beat the visitors 62-49.



In the girls’ game, the Trojans played blow for blow with Collegiate through the first half, trailing 21-20 at intermission.



In the second half, the Trojans struggled to score — and at times even to get a shot off. Collegiate grabbed a 30-22 lead after three quarters as HHS scored only two points the entire quarter on only six shots.



Collegiate increased its lead to 13 in the first 2:30 of the final period,. but Hillsboro pulled to within six at 36-30 with just over four minutes to play. Collegiate’s Ashley Bell took over from there, scoring seven points over a span of about 2:30 to clinch the victory for her team.



JuliAnne Chisholm scored 12 points to lead HHS. Hannah Marsh added 8 and Amy Duerksen 7 as the Trojans fall to 1-3.



The HHS boys,meanwhile, posted a 62-49 win on the strength of their 38-for-44 free-throw shooting. In a game that was both physical and well played, Hillsboro led 12-8 after one quarter and 34-21 at halftime. The Trojans took a 10-point led into the final quarter (43-32) and made it stand.



Eric Weinbrenner led the Trojans with 14 points, scoring all but two of his points at the stripe. Kyle Kroeker and Lucas Hamm each added 11 points.



With the win, the Trojans are 4-0 for the new season.
