Hillsboro hoop teams open season vs. Chapman

Hillsboro girls and boys opened their 2004-05 season Tuesday with games against Chapman in the first round of the Dickinson County Classic in Chapman.

The girls played well at times, but could not do it consistently enough to overtake the home team, losing by a score of 45-36. The Trojans found themselves in a 17-6 hole after one quarter, thanks in large part to a lot of turnovers against the Irish pressure.

But in the second quarter, Hillsboro neutralized Chapman with a zone defense and battled back to within three points by halftime, 24-21. Had the Trojans made more than four of 14 free throws they likely would have been ahead.

Chapman came out strong in the third quarter and reestablished their lead at 35-26. Hillsboro pulled to within five at 37-32 with 3:15 to play, but Chapman held on for the win.

JuliAnne Chisholm scored 14 points to pace HHS, while Amy Duerksen and Hannah Marsh each added 9, unofficially.

In the boys’ game, the Trojans led 11-9 after one quarter and 28-24 at the half. By the end of the third quarter, however, Chapman had taken the lead away, 39-37. The Trojans made 11 of 13 free throws in the last 4:14 of the game, including 7 of 8 in the last minute, to pull out the win.

Senior Derek Hamm played a strong game in the paint, finishing with 22 points to pace the Trojans.

Hillsboro girls and boys will play the second round of pool play on Friday against Rock Creek. Depending on the outcome of those games, Hillsboro will play for first, third or fifth on Saturday.
