Goessel-The Bluebirds relieved some frustrations Friday night with a 59-14 shellacking of Burlingame in District 3 action.
Goessel rolled up 15 first downs with 278 rushing yards and 106 yards through the air while holding Burlingame to 173 yards.
Goessel took a 6-0 on a Justin Fensky five-yard run, but Burlingame came back to lead 8-6 after one quarter.
The Bluebirds broke loose with 20 second-quarter points as Fensky scored on a 5-yard run, Garrett Hiebert hit Brett Goerzen with a 16-yard touchdown pass and Travis Buller scored on a two-yard run.
In the second half, Hiebert scored on a 25-yard run, Ryan Janzen caught a six-yard pass from Hiebert, and Fensky scored from 10 yards out to push the lead to 45-14 after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, Fensky scored from 20 and 25 yards out, ending the game via the 45-point rule.
For the night, Fensky carried 28 times for 164 yards and five touchdowns, Hiebert had nine carries for 76 yards and Buller had 31 yards on nine carries.
Hiebert was 8-for-18 passing for 102 yards and two scores.
Goerzen caught four passes for 43 yards and a score to lead the receivers.
Fensky also shone defensively, recording 13 tackles while Kyle Unruh had eight. Buller had three tackles, forced fumble and interception a pass.
The win bumps Goessel’s record to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in district play.
The Bluebirds will conclude their season Thursday by traveling to Hartford.
Centre-The Cougars lost to Axtell Friday, 62-28, in Eight Man Division II, District 1 action.
Centre jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter when Seth Jirak scored from 26 yards out. But Axtell answered with 24 unanswered points.
Centre’s Keenan Geissert broke the streak on a 78-yard kick return for a touchdown. Jirak added the 2-point run and the lead was 24-14.
After falling behind 38-14, Jirak scored again near the end of the third quarter on a one-yard run to reduce the lead to 38-20.
Centre scored once more on a 75-yard kickoff return by Geissert.
Jirak finished with 80 yards on 19 carries while Andrew Hajek picked up 57 yards on 15 carries. Centre had 184 rushing yards on 50 carries in the game.
Hajek was 3-for-10 passing for 16 yard and with three interceptions.
Jirak led the defense with 10 assisted tackles and 10 unassisted stops. Thieen Antoszyk had 10 stops and one fumble recovery.
Axtell had 262 yards on the ground and 215 through the air.
With the loss, Centre falls to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in district play.
Centre wraps up its season Thursday by hosting St. Xavier, who also brings an 0-4 district record into the contest.
Canton-Galva-The Eagles battled Inman on even terms through 48 minutes of Class 2A District 5 play, then won the game in overtime on a 25-yard field goal by Seth Moddelmog.
Canton-Galva improved to 2-6 overall and travels to Sedgwick this Thursday. The team that wins will advance into post-season play. Both teams are 1-1 on the district.
Peabody-Burns-The Warriors pushed their record to 6-2 overall with a 20-7 win over Remington.
The Warriors can wrap up the Class 2A, District 5 title with a victory at home Thursday over Olpe.
