Marion took advantage of Hillsboro mistakes to post a convincing 19-0 win at Reimer Field Friday night.

The two teams played evenly through the first half, with Marion scoring on a 2-yard run by quarterback Josh Kelsey with 4:05 left in the opening quarter. The score climaxed a 77-yard, 11-play drive on the Warriors’ first possession.

The score remained unchanged until the third quarter, when Marion took the second-half kickoff and drove 65 yards in 13-plays with Jeremy Vondenkamp scoring on a nine-yard pass from Kelsey with 5:29 left in the quarter.

Trailing 13-0, Hillsboro responded with a 65-yard, 11-play drive that ended at the Warrior 1-yard line when Lucas Hamm was stopped on a fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line.

Marion added a final touchdown in the fourth quarter after Chris Freebie picked off a Derek Hamm pass to give Marion the ball at the Trojan 36. Eight plays later, Casey Nelson scored from three yards out for the 19-0 margin.

With the loss, Hillsboro stands at 2-6 overall and 0-2 in district play with undefeated Southeast of Saline coming to town on Thursday.

Marion is 6-1 and 1-1 and will face off against Hesston on Thursday with a post-season berth likely on the line.
