Area volleyball teams put wraps on regular-season schedule

Centre-The Cougars took third place at the Eisenhower League tournament Saturday.

In the opener, Centre defeated Wakefield, 25-14, 25-19. Brianne Stahlecker had six service aces and was 21-for-21 setting.

Jill Fenske was 6-for-8 on attacks with two kills while Megan Gutsch was 8-for-9 on with two kills and one block.

In the semifinals, Centre fell to White City, 13-25, 20-25. Stahlecker was 27-for-28 setting leading to eight kills while Jackie Klenda was 9-for-12 on attacks with four kills and Gutsch was 11-for-12 with five kills.

In the third place match, Centre defeated Bennington, 25-21, 25-8. Stahlecker was 23-for-26 setting for seven kills while Luna was 7-for-7 with for four kills. Alisha Barney was 10-for-13 on attack, with six kills and four blocks.

After tournament action, Centre’s record stood at 15-10 heading into regional action.

Last Tuesday, the Cougars won three matches at Bennington. They defeated the home team, 25-19, 25-17, St. John’s Beloit, 25-8, 27-25, and Southern Cloud, 25-22, 25-15.

Peabody-Burns-The Warriors split matches at Moundridge and Canton-Galva last week.

At Canton-Galva, the Warriors won, 25-21, 25-17.

Jessi Hilliard registered seven kills, five digs, two service aces and one block in the first game. In the second game, Traci Windsor was credited with six kills and one dig while Kali Alstrom recorded 12 assists, two kills, one dig and two service aces.

In the second match, the Warriors defeated Berean Academy, 25-20, 25-23.

In Game 1, freshman Becky Morris served five consecutive aces to stake the Warriors to a 20-10 lead. Jessi Hilliard finished the game with a kill.

In Game 2, Schroeder credited Hilliard, Windsor and Morris with “good net play,”leading the Warriors to victory.

At Moundridge, lost twice, first to Ell-Saline, 24-26, 20-25. Megan Weber had 11 digs and two kills, Windsor recorded 13 digs and four kills and Morris had nine digs and seven kills.

“Traci and Becky had some big kills on the front row,” Schroeder said.

In a 17-25, 16-25 loss to Moundridge, the team managed nine kills and 18 digs. Ferren had six digs and one block while Alstrom recorded three digs and seven assists.

“The team was keyed by Kali Alstrom’s serving,” Schroeder said. “But we just couldn’t sustain the high level of play the whole game.”

Goessel–The Bluebirds went 1-2 at Sedgwick last Tuesday. Udall defeated the Bluebirds, 25-21, 14-25, 24-26.

Goessel defeated Argonia, 25-19, 25-15, before losing the final match of the day to Sedgwick, 12-25, 16-25.

In Heart of America League play, the Bluebirds lost to Inman in pool play, 9-25, 12-25, and to Little River, 19-25, 21-25, but came back to defeat Ell-Saline, 25-17, 25-17.

Goessel took a 13-17 record into yesterday’s (Tuesday) regional action at Centre High School.

Canton-Galva-The Eagles went 2-1 in the Heart of America league tournament Saturday.

Canton-Galva lost to Peabody-Burns 21-25, 17-25, but came back to beat Berean Academy, 25-20, 25-23. In the final match, the Eagles beat Berean again, 25-16, 25-22.
