Centre- The Cougars lost a 48-24 decision to Bern in northeast Kansas Friday night. Bern jumped on top 22-0 before Bryant Gutsch scored from seven yards out to cut the lead to 22-6.
Bern led 36-6 before Brent Potocnik scored on a 15-yard pass from quarterback Andrew Hajek to cut the lead to 36-12.
Centre’s deficit grew to 48-12 before Hajek scored on a four-yard run and Keenan Geissert added a six-yard run.
Centre fumbled the ball five times and lost two while Bern fumbled six times and lost three.
Seth Jirak led the Cougar rushing attack with 127 yards on 20 carries; Hajek added 62 yards on 18 carries and was 10-for-26 through the air for 154 yards. Jirak grabbed three passes for 22 yards.
Geissert was credited with 12 unassisted tackles, five assists and a fumble recovery. Jirak had 12 tackles and Tad Remy nine.
Centre is 1-5 for the season and 0-1 in district play. The Cougars travel to Republic County to battle Cuba-Hillcrest on Friday.
Canton-Galva-The Eagles lost to Hutch Trinity Friday, 33-7. The Eagles led 7-6 after one quarter on the strength of a 75-yard scoring pass from Travis Regehr to Seth Moddelmog.
Moddelmog led the Eagles in rushing with 46 yards on 19 carries; the Eagles were limited to just 86 yards on the ground.
Regehr was 6-for-20 passing for 122 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Canton-Galva falls is 1-5 for the season. The Eagles will host Moundridge Friday.
Goessel-The Bluebirds lost a heartbreaker Friday to Marais Des Cygnes, 28-22.
Goessel took a 6-0 led in the first quarter on a one-yard run by Justin Fensky.
Trailing 8-6 later in the quarter, Fensky scored again, this time from 10 yards out; Garrett Hiebert scored the 2-point conversion to stake the Bluebirds to a 14-8 lead.
Goessel took its final lead of the night when Fensky scored again from one yard out to make the score 22-16, but Marais Des Cygnes came back for two more scores to capture the win.
Fensky picked up 84 rushing yards on 21 carries and scored three touchdowns. Hiebert was 8-of-17 passing for 69 yards.
With the loss, Goessel falls to 3-3 for the season. The Bluebird will host Flint Hills on Friday.
Peabody-Burns-The Warriors dropped a 34-21 decision at Sterling Friday night.
Peabody-Burns took an early 7-0 lead when Kurt Phillips scored on a 24 yard run. Sterling then scored the game’s next 34 points to take control of the contest.
Trailing by 27, the Warriors scored on a Phillips 84-yard kickoff return and a 10-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Bishop to Todd Woodruff.
The Warriors were led in rushing by Mario Nava, who carried the ball 17 times for 83 yards. Phillips carried 14 times for 57 yards. Woodruff completed five of 20 passes for 54 yards and threw two interceptions.
With the loss, the Warriors fall to 4-2 for the season. They will host Chase County in district play Friday night.
