Trojans fall to Smoky Valley, 35-7

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN DR
Every knowledgeable Trojan knew coming in that Smoky Valley wasn’t the kind of team you’d want to face when you’re trying to build some self-confidence in your players.

Every knowledgeable Trojan fan proved to be correct as the Vikings controlled the Trojans, 35-7, in Lindsborg.

Smoky Valley scored on the first possession of the game, driving 61 yards in seven plays. Later in the quarter, the Vikings scored again, aided by a 35-yard punt return by Smoky’s Shannon Christians that put the Vikings in good field position.

That made the score 14-0 by the end of the first quarter. By halftime the lead was 21-0 and by the end of three quarters it was 35-0.

The Trojans continued their recent tradition of scoring a futile touchdown in the fourth quarter when Derek Hamm connected with Tyler Goldsby for a 23-yard scoring pass in the end zone with 6:31 left in the game. By that time, the MCAA’s 30-point rule was in effect and the clock was running continuously.

The loss dropped Hillsboro to 1-3 while Smoky improved to 4-0. The road doesn’t get an easier next week when Hillsboro travels to Wichita to play a tough Collegiate team that lost to Smoky in overtime.
