Trojan tennis team earns title at Circle High meet

The Hillsboro tennis team won its first tournament of the season by outscoring a five-team field at a round-robin meet at Circle High School on Thursday.

The Trojans scored 25 points to outdistance El Dorado with 20, Circle 10, Wichita Independent 6 and Wichita Trinity 4.

“It was a good feeling to win this meet,” said coach Lynn Wiebe. “It was not the toughest meet that we have had this year, but it was rewarding to win the necessary matches and earn the points needed to take first place.”

Leading the way for HHS was senior Emily Railsback, who won the No. 1 singles competition by beating Meesha Patel of Independent, 8-2, defeating Trinity and Circle by default and beating Danielle Darrell of El Dorado, 8-5.

Kelsey Kaufman and Amanda Faber teamed to win No. 2 doubles. The twosome defeated Trinity by default, defeated Circle, 8-7 (7-1), El Dorado, 8-2, and Independent, 8-0.

The No. 1 doubles team of Lora Andrews and Erin Wiebe placed second, beating Circle, 8-3, losing to El Dorado, 3-8, beating Independent, 8-2, and beating Trinity, 8-5.

Danielle Hagen, playing No. 2 singles, finished third. She lost to Becky Badney of El Dorado, 5-8, defeated Independent by default, lost to Sydney Miller of Trinity, 7-8 (3-7), and defeated Marynn Gavat of Circle, 8-2.

Junior varsity-The Trojan JV team competed on its home courts on Thursday.

In No. 1 singles, Audrey Weinbrenner was second, Mallory Blecha third and Heather Stepanek fifth.

In No. 2 singles, Courtney Fast was third, Maria Loewen fourth and Anna Woelk fifth.

In No. 1 doubles, Amanda Bartel and Chelsey Harmon were first, Francesca Bona and Whitney Washmon third, and Lauren Just and Greta Wiebe sixth.

In No. 2 doubles, Julia Loewen and Alysha Claassen were first, Amber Loewen and Tessa Simpson second and Whitney Allen and Anna Johnson tied for third.

Coming-The Trojans are scheduled to play at Collegiate on Tuesday, then will host their own meet on Thursday at the Sports Complex. Matches begin at 3:30.
