Centre-The Cougars opened their season Aug. 31 with a 1-2 record at the Inman Quadrangular.
In the opener, the Cougars defeated Canton-Galva, 8-28, 25-15, 30-28. Centre was successful on 58 of 63 serves, with Jackie Klenda recording five aces. Brianne Stahlecker was 52 of 54 on set attempts resulting in 11 kills and Alyssa Luna was 18 of 20 on sets. Klenda converted 24 of 27 spike attempts while registering eight kills.
In the second match, Centre fell to the host team, 12-25, 12-25. The Cougars were 24 of 26 in serving, and Stahlecker was 19 of 20 for setting with six kills. Megan Gutsch recorded six kills while Jill Fenske was 6 for 7 on spike attempts and Klenda was 6 for 6 with three kills.
In the final match, Centre lost to Elyria, 22-25, 23-25. The Cougars made 42 of 45 serves. Stahlecker was 33-for-34 for setting with five kills and Selena Seifert was 10-for-10 on setting. Fenske converted 13 of 16 spike attempts and Klenda was 10 for 12.
Goessel-The Bluebirds finished with a 1-2 record at Claflin on Aug. 31.
The Bluebirds lost to the host team, 20-25, 20-25, then defeated Tescott, 25-20, 19-25, 25-11. In the third match, Goessel fell to Lyons, 19-25, 16-25.
“I feel very positive about things,” coach Sandy Banman said. “Obviously it’s early and there are things to work on, but I think we will have some good matches this year.”
