Bluejays drop two of three matches at Bethel tourney

The Tabor tennis team came home from the Bethel Invitational in North Newton last Friday and Saturday with a 1-2 record.

In the opener, Tabor, beat Newman University, 5-4.

No. 1 singles Laurel Delamater won 6-3, 6-0. No. 2 Danni Brucks lost 5-7, 2-6, No. 3 Ashlee Helmley won 6-2, 6-2, No. 4 Jennifer Proffitt won 6-3, 6-0, No. 5 Kim Harden lost 5-7, 3-6, and No. 6 Lindsay Adrian won 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of Delamater and Helmley won 7-6, 6-2, while No. 2 Brucks and Proffitt lost 3-6, 4-6 and No. 3 Harden and Adrian lost 2-6, 6-3, 6-7.

In the semifinals, the Bluejays lost to Johnson County Community College, 0-9.

In No. 1 doubles, Delamater and Helmley lost 1-8, No. 2 Brucks and Proffitt lost 0-8, and No. 3 Harden and Adrian lost 3-8.

In singles, No. 1 Delamater fell 0-6, 0-6, No. 2 Brucks lost 3-6, 7-6, 6-7, No. 3 Helmley fell 2-6, 1-6, No. 4 Proffitt lost 5-7, 1-6, No. 5 Harden lost 0-6, 3-6, and No. 6 Adrian lost 0-6, 3-6.

In the battle for third place, Tabor lost to the host school, 1-8.

No. 1 doubles Delamater and Helmley lost 7-9, No. 2 Brucks and Proffitt fell 4-8 and No. 3 Harden and Adrian lost 2-8.

In singles, Delamater lost 4-6, 3-6, No. 2 Brucks lost 2-6, 3-6, No. 3 Helmley registered the only victory, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6, No. 4 Proffitt lost, 3-6, 7-5, 6-7, No. 5 Harden lost 5-7, 1-6 and No. 6 Adrian fell 3-6, 5-7.

“This team continues to show positive signs that we will be a threat in our conference even though we have not started the way we would have liked,” coach Lonnie Isaac said.

“Once our doubles combinations become accustomed to each other, I believe this will be a strong point for our team and our singles play has already become stronger at several positions.

“We have several key KCAC matches coming up the next few weeks which will be crucial to us gaining a good seed at the conference tournament.”
