Francis Groening, 89

Francis J. Groening, 89, formerly in the sand and gravel business, died Aug. 8 at Hillsboro Community Medical Center Long Term Care Unit.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 12, at Trinity Mennonite Church in Hillsboro with pastor Dave Plett officiating. Burial will be at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Cemetery.

He was born July 10, 1915, to Frank U. and Anna (Fleming) Groening in Lehigh. On Nov. 25, 1943, he was married to Martha Wiens, who predeceased him in 1992.

He is survived by three daughters, Connie and Don Hendrickson of Hillsboro, Sheryl and Don McDaniel of Holton and Gala Liebelt of Satanta; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with Celebrate Hope.

Lawrence Burnett, 80

Lawrence C. Burnett, 80, retired Santa Fe Railroad worker, died Aug. 8 at St. Luke Hospital in Marion following a short illness.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at Zeiner Funeral Home in Marion with pastor Bill Sherfy officiating. Burial will be at Marion Cemetery.

He was born Nov. 14, 1923, to Lawrence and Gladys (Mott) Burnett in Marion. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was preceded in death by wife Marie in 2002.

He is survived by two sisters, Joy Hamm of El Dorado and Mary Bachner of Niles, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial has been established with Emanuel Baptist Church in care of Zeiner Funeral Home.

Andrew David, 87

Andrew Christian David, 87, farmer, died Aug. 8 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 12, at Durham Baptist Cemetery in rural Durham.

He was born Nov. 6 1916, to Jacob E. and Leah (Lorenz) David northwest of Durham.

He is survived by one brother, Lester David and wife Alvina of Sunapee, N.H., and one sister, Elma David of rural Durham.

A memorial has been established with First Baptist Church of Durham.

Eldon A. Gertzen, 82

Eldon A. Gertzen, 82, farmer, died Aug. 7 at Showalter Villa in Hesston.

The memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Tabor Mennonite Church near Goessel with pastors Corey Miller and Karen Andres officiating. Burial will be at 9 a.m. at Tabor Cemetery.

He was born July 28, 1922, to Dan S. and Pauline (Schmidt) Goertzen in Newton. On April 26, 1944, he was married to Susie Flaming, who survives.

He is also survived by one son, Stanley Goertzen of rural Walton; one daughter, Brenda Buller of rural Hillsboro; one sister, Gladys Krause of Denver; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial has been established with Tabor Mennonite Church.

Robert Madsen, 75

Robert W. Madsen, 75, mechanic and carpenter, died July 31 at his home in Florence.

The funeral was Aug. 6 at Zeiner Funeral Chapel in Florence with pastor Jim Pohlman officiating. Burial was at Hillcrest Cemetery in Florence.

He was born March 24, 1929, to Neils and Mary Ethel (Wilbur) Madsen in Marion County. He was preceded in death by wife Ethel in 1997.

He is survived by one son, Jim Madsen of Rio Rancho, N.M.; two daughters, Marsha Lewis of Oakley, Calif., and Carol Ann Ouellette of Antioch, Calif.; three brothers, Earl Madsen of Peabody, Arthur Madsen of Abilene and Willard Madsen of Florida; two sisters, Esther Hiebert and LaVerna Hess, both of Abilene; and three grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association in care of Zeiner Funeral Home of Florence.

Emma A. Klenda, 94

Emma A. Klenda, 94, homemaker, died Aug. 4. at Marion Manor Nursing Home.

The funeral Mass was Aug. 7 at St. John Nepomucene Church of Holy Family Parish in Pilsen with Father Steven Gronert officiating. The Pilsen Cemetery was the burial site.

She was born Jan. 8, 1910, to William and Mary (Stika) Klenda on the family farm near Pilsen.

She is survived by one brother, Ted Klenda of Tulsa, Okla.; one sister, Alice Klenda of Wichita; and several nieces and nephews.
