Sports photos from the year available through new Web service

Area high school sports fans will now have unprecedented access to photographs of their favorite athletes.

Starting this week, the Hillsboro Free Press is offering some 1,000 published and unpublished images of area athletes from the 2003-04 school year, particularly from Hillsboro and Marion teams.

By going to the Free Press Web site (, sports fans can link to a service call dotPhoto. There they will find an archive of photos made available by the Free Press and can order full-color prints in an array of sizes and formats. The prints should arrive at the customer’s door within three to four working days.

Trojan fans, for example, will find separate folders for all 13 team sports HHS offered in 2003-04, plus separate folders featuring the Trojans competing in the state basketball tournament in March and the state track meet in June.

Once linked to the dotPhoto site, the curious can click onto the desired team folder and find a significant collection of images taken by Free Press photographers.

For a closer look at a specific image, the fan can click on it to enlarge it. If the fan wants to purchase a print, he or she simply clicks on a “shopping cart” icon and chooses from six print sizes, ranging from 3×5 inches to a poster-size 14×11 inches.

Multiple prints can be ordered; prices range from $5.99 to $16.99, according to the size of the print.

For gift options, photos can be ordered in a variety of formats, including applications for coffee mugs, T-shirts and puzzles.

The dotPhoto site also makes it easy to inform friends and relatives of desirable prints.

“We’re excited about making this service available to the world,” said Joel Klaassen, Free Press publisher. “We publish a lot of great sports photos, but we also have a lot of good photos that we’ve taken but don’t have room to print.

“This is a very efficient way to let our athletes, as well as their parents, relatives and friends, see the photos we’ve taken, and then order prints as a permanent keepsake.”

Because the service is new, the photos were collected and made available from the entire 2003-04 school year. From this point on, all sports photos will be offered week by week, according to issue date-along with other photos from that issue.

Photos are available on the dotPhoto site for up to 90 days after they’ve been posted.

In addition to the Trojan collection, photos from the Free Press coverage of Marion Warrior teams also will available. Photos of Canton-Galva, Centre, Goessel, Marion and Peabody-Burns athletes who competed in the state track meet are available in the “June 9” issue folder.

By identifying the issue date, readers also can arrange for a print of any photo taken by the Free Press since it began publishing in 1998. Call the Free Press for information at 620-947-5702.
