EDITORIAL: We salute volunteers

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN
Anyone who tries to make small towns special knows that the lifeblood of a community’s future are its volunteers. Space does not allow us here to list the many, many people who volunteered over the past several months to make the Memorial Day weekend such a success in Hillsboro. Even if we had the space, we’d no doubt miss more than a few folks who helped but did so without fanfare or public announcement. Such is the beauty-even heroism-of true volunteerism.

Hillsboro is not alone in this valuable natural resource. Marion will reap the fruit of volunteerism this weekend when Chingawassa Days kicks off. Peabody will do the same in about a month when that city’s successful Fourth of July celebration begins. And so it goes in every Marion County community.

Without volunteers, small towns will not survive. With them, we will not fail. -DR
