Frank Brenneman was recognized as the 2003-04 winner of the Clarence R. Hiebert Excellence in Teaching Award at the Tabor College Appreciation Dinner on Monday, May 24.

The award is given annually to a member of the Tabor College faculty who best exemplifies the qualities of excellent teaching.

Those qualities include a strong Christian commitment, a record of excellence in teaching at least three years at Tabor, evidence of integrating faith and learning and contribution to the overall academic climate.

The 2003-04 recipient of this award, professor of mathematical sciences.

This honor includes a plaque and a cash award paid for by an anonymous donor.

Brenneman earned his bachelor’s degree from Goshen (Ind.) College in 1960, and his doctorate from Oklahoma State University in 1967. He has taught and served as the chair of the mathematical sciences department at Tabor since 1980.

According to Howard Keim, vice president of academics and student development and presenter of the award, Brenneman was chosen for several aspects of his service to the college.

“First, Dr. Brenneman has maintained high standards in the classroom,” Keim said.

“Second, Dr. Brenneman has balanced these demands for excellence with willingness to help students. He has spent many hours outside of class mentoring individuals, and also literally agonizing over them in prayer.

“Third, Dr. Brenneman’s students have distinguished themselves as teachers and leaders in the industry.

“Fourth, he has stayed in touch with his graduates through the departmental newsletter and personal contacts.

“Finally, he has contributed much to the work of Tabor beyond the classroom.”

With wide-ranging interests from basketball to theology, said Keim, Brenneman supports many different events on campus and has developed relationships with other colleges, such as the math coop with neighboring Bethel and McPherson colleges.

“While this award recognizes one person, it is meant to raise our awareness of the teaching mission of our college and to celebrate the good work of our entire faculty,” Keim said.

Past recipients of the award include Allen Hiebert, 2000; Judy Harder, 2001; Lynn Jost, 2002; and David Faber, 2003.
