EDITORIAL: Down the brain drain

We couldn’t help but feel sadness as Hillsboro High School valedictorian Katie Fast and salutatorian Allison Kunkel delivered their speeches at Sunday’s commencement. Oh, the speeches themselves were fine enough-witty and upbeat in content, and articulate and poised in delivery. It’s exactly what you’d hope for from the top two students in a graduating class.

What tempered the experience was the strong suspicion that these two young women-and most of their terrific classmates-likely wouldn’t realize their lofty dreams in our small town. A handful may stay with us another four years or so to pursue a post-secondary at Tabor College, but once that diploma is in hand-then where?

We have a great school system that prepares kids to succeed in any setting they choose. That’s what a “good education” does. Too bad more of them won’t be challenged to succeed here as coworkers and neighbors in our own community. Such a loss. Can we do anything to plug the brain drain? -DR
