Ladies Spring Tea

on May 20, Goessel

The Goessel Senior Center will hold its annual Ladies Spring Tea at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 20, at the Senior Center.

The program will include a presentation on “High Tea” by Tina Block Ediger and musical entertainment by the lower-elementary students from Goessel Elementary School under the direction of Marcia Brubaker.

All ladies are welcome.

Florence alumni plan

May 29 banquet

The annual Florence Memorial High School Alumni Association banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, May 29, at the Florence gymnasium.

The theme of the 108th annual banquet is “A Leap Into the Past.”

All alumni, former teachers and guests are invited to attend the banquet. Representatives from reunion classes will be recognized at five-year intervals.

Tickets for the banquet are $11 per person. All ticket reservations must be received by Saturday, May 22.

Mail reservations and payment to Florence Alumni Association, 873 Bluestem, Florence, KS 66851.

A scholarship fund of $1,000 has been established and will be awarded to a graduating senior of USD 408 at the banquet.

Donations to this scholarship fund may be made in care of the FMHS Alumni Association Scholarship Fund and mailed to 873 Bluestem, Florence, KS 66851.

GHS art exhibit

features senior Soyez

Goessel High School senior Ryan Soyez will have a one-man senior art exhibit at the GHS Emil Kym Art Gallery.

The opening reception was 7 p..m. to 9 p.m., Monday, May 17. The exhibit will be up through Friday.

“Soyez is known for highly imaginative human and biomorphic forms,” said Brian Stucky, instructor. “He recently won ‘Best of Show’ at the (Heart of America) league art contest out of 250 pieces.”

CCC Statue Project

receives KDWP grant

A grant of $2,000 from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has been awarded to the Civilian Conservation Corps Statue Project fund at Marion County Park and Lake.

The statue will be placed at the lake and park as a memorial to the 38,000 Kansas CCC men who worked to preserve natural resources and provided the state with recreational areas and lakes.

The grant is through Wildtrust, a donation program of the KDWP, that solicits and coordinates contributions of land, personal property, services and funds.

The proposed statue will cost $18,500, not including freight. Supporters of the CCC Statue Project have set a goal of $20,000, and more than $16,000 has been raised to date.

Hillsboro blood drive to be held June 1

The Hillsboro American Red Cross blood drive will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday, June 1, at First Mennonite Church, 102 S. Ash.

Blood donors must be at least 17, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Most medications do not prevent people from donating blood.

Organizers remind participants to drink plenty of water prior to their donation.
