The Hillsboro basketball teams came away with a pair of wins at Halstead Tuesday night.

In the girls’ game, Hillsboro wasn’t at the top of its game but didn’t need to be as they handled the 2-15 Dragons, 45-27.

Hillsboro jumped to an 8-1 lead with less than two minutes gone in the game and appeared to be on the way to a route. But instead, Hillsboro expanded its lead slowly as the game progressed. The score after one quarter was 13-7, the lead was 25-13 at the half, and then 33-20 after three quarters.

Amy Duerksen had her most productive game of the season on the offensive end with a team-high 12 points. JuliAnne Chisholm added 11 and Emily Ratzlaff nine.

With the win the Trojans are 5-2 in the MCAA Mid Division and 10-7 overall.

The Hillsboro boys, meanwhile, were in a dogfight most of the night and led by only two points after three quarters, 47-45.

But in the fourth quarter, the Trojans stepped up their game another notch and took command with an effective trapping defense and great passing on offense on the way to a 65-52 victory.

In that final quarter, the Trojans allowed Halstead only four field-goal attempts and the Dragons made only one.

Tyler Peachey put on another strong offensive performance, finishing with 21 points. Eric Weinbrenner added 11 and Daniel Deckert 10.

The win boosts Hillsboro to 7-0 in the Mid Division, clinching an outright championship, and to 15-2 overall.
