The Hillsboro basketball teams split their games at Sterling Friday night.

The girls had victory within their grasp but ended up losing on a shot at the final buzzer, 49-48.

In a battle that stayed close all night, Hillsboro held a 48-44 lead with less than a minute to play, but the Trojans missed the front end of a one-and-one on three straight occasions, leaving the door open for the Black Bears, who won the game on an inbounds play with Candice Lacey scoring in the paint at the buzzer.

Emily Ratzlaff scored 14 points and Katie Fast 10 to pace the Trojans, who fall to 9-7 overall and 4-2 in MCAA Mid Division play.

The boys, meanwhile, got off to a stellar start in their 55-43 victory. Tyler Peachey scored 12 first-quarter points to lead the Trojans to a 19-5 lead at the first break. By halftime, Hillsboro had extended the lead to 31-13.

But the Black Bear did not roll over. Back-to-back 3-pointers fueled a 10-0 Sterling run to start the third quarter and set the tone for what turned out to be a hard-fought battle for Hillsboro. Sterling got as close as six points in the fourth quarter before Hillsboro nailed down the win.

Peachey finished with 25 points to lead Hillsboro while Eric Weinbrenner added 11 before fouling out. The win boosts Hillsboro’s record to 14-2.
