The Hillsboro High School girls put forth a strong defensive effort against Salina South in Thursday’s semifinals game at the Southeast of Saline Invitational. Unfortunately, they couldn’t get enough shots to drop on the other end of the court and lost to the Cougars, 36-23.

Neither team shot the ball well, with both squads finishing around 33 percent. But the Cougars had a few more opportunities and hit five 3-pointers to spell the difference.

Hillsboro trailed after one quarter, 10-5, and then by 19-10 at intermission. The Cougars pushed the lead to 10 after three quarters, 28-18. Hillsboro pulled to within seven points with 3:12 to play, but the Cougars made six of eight free throws down the stretch while Hillsboro failed to score on only two shots taken.

JulieAnne Chisholm led Hillsboro with seven points, Emily Ratzlaff added five.

With the loss, Hillsboro drops to 7-5 on the season and will play a tough Junction City squad for third place at 6:30 p.m., Friday.
